Siegfried is a guest at the court of Gunther, his wife Kriemhild's brother. When Hagen learns that Siegfried is about to ascend the throne of the government-weary Ute, he believes that this will damage the empire. He coaxes the secret of the vulnerable spot on her husband's back from Kriemhild. Then he accompanies Siegfried on the hunt.
