Prague in September 1989. Hundreds of GDR citizens willing to leave the country have taken refuge in the West German embassy. Bettina and her husband Stefan are on their honeymoon in Prague. At dawn, after a successful dinner with their long-time friends Thomas, Karin and Ziesche, Stefan reveals to the surprised Bettina that he has been planning for a long time to get into the West German embassy in Prague. Stefan succeeds in persuading Bettina against all odds to flee to the embassy. She is to hold out there to defend their joint claim to leave the country. Meanwhile, Stefan leaves in a hurry to catch up with their son Felix. The boy has initially stayed with his grandparents in Berlin to disguise the escape plan.
