Helena is a 20-something woman who has lived virtually her whole life alone on the Orbiter 9 space station. Her parents had told her, by archived video, their intent to commit suicide so that (then) baby Helena could survive, due to an urgent depletion of oxygen. The orbiters’ computer, Rebecca, cared for her.
