Lauritz lives on a small farm with his granddaughter Adda. He has always had a hard time coping with the day and the road, and the bailiff often has to turn the road along Lauritz to seek to get the taxes from him. The friendly dairy manager and parish warden, Rasmus, would like to help Lauritz, who, however, is one of those who reluctantly accepts.
