In 1981, ten-year-old Ursula Herrmann disappeared whilst cycling home. She was locked inside a buried box with a pile of comics and some sweets, then left to suffocate while her kidnappers attempted to extract a two million deutschmark ransom. In 2010 a neighbour was sentenced to life imprisonment, a conviction that was based entirely on circumstantial evidence which many continue to question.
