Bernie (James Hazeldine) and Sylvia (Amanda Redman) were sweethearts when they were teenagers. They went their separate ways and didn't see one another for twenty years. One day, they meet up again. During the time they were apart, their lives followed very different courses. Bernie is now a widower who earns his living driving a London taxi cab, while Sylvia is a successful literary agent.
