Mavis Gary is a bitter, divorced, 37-year-old alcoholic who moonlights as a ghost writer of a series of young adult novels. Despite being on deadline for her latest novel, she travels to her hometown of Mercury, Minnesota after receiving a birth announcement from her high school boyfriend and his wife. Believing this to be a sign that she and Buddy are meant to be together, Mavis heads home to take what's hers.
