Vittorio Gassmann (born Gassmann), popularly known as Il Mattatore, was a versatile film star who was also one of Italy's leading classical stage actors. His first big international role was in Bitter Rice (1949), and although he was based in Italy he worked in America appearing in War and Peace (1956) A Wedding (1978) and Sleepers (1996)
