Naples, 1959. Ferdinando Quagliarolo has a lotto bank inherited from his father and managed by a young man, Mario Bertolini, who is secretly in love with his daughter Stella. Every night Don Ferdinando goes around the rooftops of Naples together with the "porter" Aglietiello in search of nocturnal visions that suggest the numbers to play in the Lotto, but he continues to identify the wrong ones and to lose. On the contrary, Mario always wins, and at a certain point he gets a millionaire prize thanks to the numbers that the good soul of Ferdinand's father, Don Saverio, dictated to him in a dream. For this, and for the terrible envy he feels towards that lucky young man, Don Ferdinando believes that the winnings belong to him, and steals the winning ticket from Mario, much to the chagrin of his daughter and his wife, Donna Concetta.
