Sylvia Millet, a singing teacher, discovers that one of her students, Lolita, is the daughter of Étienne Cassard, a writer she admires. Thanks to Lolita, Sylvia and her husband Pierre, himself a writer, will join Étienne's circle of friends. Gradually, Sylvia realizes that Etienne is not the man she imagined and that he has little respect for his daughter, Lolita.
